Why hasn’t anyone made good centralized hosting for open source software projects? SourceForge has a crappy interface (especially on the project admin side) and Google (ironically) has a terrible search. I’d completely host my projects, but I like the download mirroring of these systems.

Amen! I’ve seen a lot of projects go to using Trac for self-hosting projects. Gaim recently switched to it when they changed their name to Pidgin IM.
Download mirroring is nice, but with DreamHost bandwidth is relatively plentiful. Let me know if you’d like to use my account as a mirror for any downloads.
It seems like a lot of projects self-host, and then use SourceForge, etc. for download links . . . .
